History

Declared a HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF HUMANITY by UNESCO in 1982, Cartagena de Indias is an open-air museum of the Spanish colonial period in the Americas. The COLONIAL CITY is surrounded by 11 kilometers of walls and fortifications, in whose narrow streets stand CIVIL, RELIGIOUS AND RESIDENTIAL MONUMENTS of great beauty and importance. It has the most extensive and preserved fortifications in South America, an eminent example of the MILITARY ARCHITECTURE OF THE XVI, XVII AND XVIII CENTURIES.
